What is Cordyceps?
Chinese cordyceps or Chinese mace (Cordyceps sinensis) is a species of parasitic fungus. Unlike other beneficial Asian mushrooms, it does not grow on trees, but occurs in the ground. Its main medium is the moth larvae found there, which the clubfly first attacks, occupies and kills, and then draws from them the nutrients needed for development.
Cordyceps is naturally found in the high mountains of Nepal and Tibet. Harsh climatic conditions and a clean environment make this mushroom abound in beneficial substances for the body, and its use in Asian systems of traditional medicine dates back hundreds of years.
The main active ingredients that are attributed to the health-promoting properties of this mushroom are: cordyceps acid, adenosine and cordycepin. Besides, like other medicinal mushrooms, cordyceps also contains polysaccharides.
